Around 650 B.C., Hippocrates spoke about the relief that flax provided for abdominal pains and in the 8th Century A.D., Charlemagne, aware of the significant benefits offered by flax, passed laws making the consumption of this crop mandatory. Flaxseeds are a rich source of lignans and the omega-3 fatty acid Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Lignans act as a strong antioxidant and can support cardiovascular and menopausal health.  When we consume flaxseeds, our body converts ALA into the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA – providing the cardiovascular, joint, cognitive and eye health benefits offered by these fatty acids. Hempseeds have been cultivated for over 12,000 years by many civilizations for its beneficial nutrients. In the 1990s, during mass starvation in Africa, charitable organizations such as the Red Cross used hempseeds to cook porridge for nourishment.  Hempseeds are a good source of omega-3, omega-6, protein and fiber.  These nutrients improve skin health, cardiovascular health, joint health, women’s health, cognitive function, eye health and can support weight loss. In the early 18th century, black currant seeds were extensively used for skincare and more recently, the oil from the seed was discovered to be a potent source of the omega-6 fatty acid, GLA. This omega-6 fatty acid is beneficial for skin health, cardiovascular health, joint health, women’s health and weight management.
		
The black currant plant can thrive in different types of soil but grows best in well-drained soils and in good sunlight. The rootstock is planted in a hole, twice its diameter. It takes over a year to grow, requiring water in dry periods and fertilization in late winter. The dark brown seeds are collected and crushed to extract blackcurrant seed oil.
