This malt is produced using an heirloom variety called Wrens Abruzzi that has been grown in the south for over 200 years. Look for classic blend herbal spice, black peppercorn, and citrus flavor.

Carolina Rye

Conventional (Non-GMO)

This malt uses a new regionally adapted variety of soft red wheat called Oakes.  This variety was developed for use in the artisan bread industry, but we’ve found it makes a great malting variety as well! The aroma and flavor are more pronounced than traditional wheats, while still promoting head retention and body in the finished beer. 
		
Try it in your favorite hefeweizen or saison recipe.

Appalachian Wheat

Slightly undermodified and kilned at lower temperatures than our Pale Malt.  Maintains more of the delicate grassy, grainy flavors that are associated with this style of malt.

Pilsner Malt

A Riverbend original! Notes of caramel and toasted bread are prominently featured in this product. We’ve developed the color and aroma of this malt to perform like a light Munich/Vienna style malt. 
		
This versatile malt packs enough diastastic power to perform as a base malt in a Belgian Dubbel recipe or can be used at lower percentages in an Ordinary Bitter.

Malt production has homogenized over the past 150 years, drastically reducing the variety and flavor available to brewers and distillers. Riverbend has disrupted the agri-business-controlled malt industry and shortened the malt supply chain by sourcing locally and building flavors that highlight the terroir of our region.

We have built strong, lasting relationships with the small family farms that are our growers. This foundation ensures a steady supply of high-quality grain and supports Southern agriculture, bringing dollars back to the Southeastern farm economy.

We also understand that you are running a business. We’ve found that beer and spirits consumers have an appreciation for craft malt for many of the same reasons that they appreciate craft beers and single-barrel whiskey.

Products that highlight the inclusion of Riverbend malt tend to sell in higher volumes and frequently at higher price points. That is one of the many reasons why so many of our customers opt to place the Riverbend name on their cans, bottles, menus, and promotional materials.

The Recycling Co-op is an exciting program spearheaded by Sierra Nevada, Hi-Wire Brewing, and many others across Western North Carolina. Through this program, we are able to recycle 100% of our polywoven super sacks and 50-pound bags. This program recycles an additional 4 to 6 tons of plastics annually.

Composting of organic material waste from the malting process reduces landfill inputs. We have partnered with Danny’s Dumpster here in Asheville to provide this valuable service. This program collects approximately 7 to 8 tons of organic waste annually.
